Living in remote villages in western Mexico’s Sierra Madre, the Huichol people trace their ancestry to the high civilizations of ancient Mexico. Renowned for their wide variety of art forms and their highly evolved aesthetic sense, the Huichol have carried their religious traditions and symbolism into the modern age. This notecard collection features the work of Guadalupe Hernandez Carrillo, a gifted Huichol artist from Huejuquilla el Alto, Jalisco, whose colorful paintings made with chaquira (tiny beads) record the shamanic traditions, mysticism, and mythologies that still flourish in his remote homeland.
Guadalupe’s work is archived at The Huichol Center for Cultural Survival and Traditional Arts, located in Huejuquilla el Alto. This project is dedicated to the rescue and conservation of this threatened indigenous culture and the preservation of their myths, symbolism, and tribal wisdom.
